LA ROTONDE

Our server Emelie (I hope that’s right) was fabulous! We had a great night. We are from Germany and can’t speak French but we we were all working together to make it work. Thank you Emelie! Food was phantastic. Unfortunately, we didn’t like the drinks very much though they were well crafted but I wish there was one or two more classics on the menu like a proper Daiquiri, a Gimlet or anything like that cause I think it’s perfect for a hot night at the French Riviera.

Delicious food.

Disclaimer up front - this is not a criticism of the servers (who were working hard) or the food, but the system of service. Very slow and inefficient, which spoils the enjoyment of the food.

The food we had was generally good. Foie gras and salad to start, with roast pork and fish soup for the mains. We received the pork quite cold, but let me get to the reasons behind that - which was the speed of service.

We rushed to arrive at our reservation time 1945hrs. We were promptly served with water by a friendly waiter. From then, we waited around 15 minutes before the main server came to take our drinks order. After pouring two glasses of wine, it was another 10 minutes before we got our food orders in (this brings us to around 2010hrs).

Our starters came at 2040hrs, then mains at 2115hrs. As I said above, the pork was effectively cold and just room temperature (I doubt it was meant to be served that way as it was a roast pork loin). I wonder if it was because they left it on the serving line while waiting for the soup to get ready. This was really quite inexcusable and ruined the meal
for us.

Dessert came at 2140hrs, and it took another 15minutes for me to even try to pay the bill. So the entire meal was more than 2 hours for a simple 3 course meal.

The issue is not so much the time it took, but the amount of inordinate waiting in between each stage of the meal.

It seemed to me that the bottleneck was that the main server had to take everyone’s orders, clear their plates and handle the bill payments. A lot of other waiters could only serve food and drink. In my estimate, that means one man was serving over 25-30 people.

Another small unhappiness of mine is the huge markup on wine. Each glass of wine was 28 euros, when the entire bottle would be around 30-40 from a store. But that’s not surprising for restaurants - so I won’t hold it against them. Just a note for those hoping to get a good deal on wine.

La Rotonde, magnifique établissement au style art déco, une gastronomie exquise et une belle soirée accompagnée par un service d’excellence ! Un merci tout particulier à Yanis, jeune homme méritant, professionnel et très agréable, qui a orchestré notre dîner avec beaucoup d’attention.
Le rendez-vous est pris pour l’année prochaine !

This is a not miss restaurant in Nice! The staff are just next level amazing and everyone was so helpful for my dairy and gluten allergy. They brought our gluten free bread and even made me a special dessert. Highly recommend!
