Not exactly sure where all the stellar reviews came from. Had wanted to visit the famous store associated with Hemingway, James Joyce, and of course one of the scenes in the film "Before Sunrise" for a very long time. I was surprised to see that the store wasn't tucked away in a side street, but near a busy intersection. The entrance was staggered, which was fine. Unfortunately, there were signs everywhere saying we couldn't photograph. The lady at the door was dour and unfriendly. Honestly, nothing I couldn't buy at a local bookstore in America.

As a famous landmark, I enjoyed it moderately. It's certainly a pretty store, but I didn't feel all that welcomed as a bibliophile. Far too many other places to browse that are less crowded. On a positive note, the cafe next door served one of the best iced coffees I have had in a while. Also, there was a friendly British gent my wife and I talked to outside. Otherwise, if you are visiting Paris the first time, I would skip it and check out the other shops in the area.

Such a wonderful place to visit and walk in the footsteps of literary giants. My partner and myself are both bibliophiles and I chose it as the perfect place to ask her to marry me. The staff were amazing.

Absolutely loved this English language book store in the heart of Paris. Great selection of classic books and such a great history. If you are a book lover you must visit this store. If you are a book banner, just go away.

An English language book shop. A good range and very popular being so close to Notre dame cathedral. The was a long line of people wait to get inside the shop. The staff were making sure only a certain number of people were allowed inside at one time. There is also cafe next door, which served good coffee.

Una librería preciosa, con un encanto único. Todo está cuidadosamente ordenado y el ambiente es acogedor, como sacado de una novela. Cada rincón invita a explorar y perderse entre libros.
Mi única sugerencia: ojalá hubiera un pequeño espacio para sentarse y quedarse un rato leyendo o disfrutando del lugar con más calma. Aun así, sin duda volvería. Un lugar imperdible para amantes de la literatura en París

Tarihi dönüşü ve geçmişi göz önüne alındığında Paris’te görülmesi gereken yerler arasına giriyor bu kitapçı. Her zaman önünde sıra oluyor. Sıra çabuk ilerliyor. Üst katına çıkıp sessiz bir ortamda kitap okuyabilirisiniz. Çoğu kişi kitap almak için değil sosyal medyada ki ünü için gidiyor.

I truly wanted to love that bookshop, but it was SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT!

As a real book lover, I can tell you: this is not a place for book lovers AT ALL!

The book selection is SO POPULAR. Unless you're into fantasy novels, criminal stories, love stories and stuff like that, you will never find great books there.

History books or books about politics? almost nothing. Psychology books? so popular and boring selection. Literature classics? there are so few for an English bookshop that it's not even worth looking at the shelf, you will have a much better selection anywhere else. Spiritual books? There are so few you cannot even call that a shelf. Comic novels? Very few to choose from and not a great variety. Children books? probably the worst selection I have ever seen.

The only pro of that shop is that you have a place upstairs to sit and to read books around other books without being disturbed. Otherwise, Shakespeare should not be very happy that they use his name for such a shop.

On top of that, the staff seems to be stressed, not friendly, you are crammed into a small area. Nothing agreeable at all in this experience. I'm not going to come again.

Do not follow the hype, it's not worth it at all. Save your time (count at least 15 minutes queuing), save your money, save your energy and go to real bookshops, the ones for real books lovers, intellectuals, the ones which display a great variety of books, ideas, the ones which embody the real spirit of books.

Massive line to get in, but absolutely worth it. A charming, historic bookstore full of character and literary magic. Definitely worth checking out if you’re nearby!

A must see experience for all book lovers! There was a line and the shop is a no-photo shop so you really get to unplug and shop. They have books for sale and I highly recommend purchasing a book so you can get a location stamp! I would visit here again!

This romantic and charming bookstore—which is located in the Latin Quarter with lots of restaurants and bars nearby—was a little escape where you can easily lose track of time looking through all the sections. At the register they stamp every book you buy with their seal turning them into memorabilia. Must visit!

Excellent bookstore! I just wish the French authors section was a little other and a little easier to access. I like that they limit the people in the store at a time, and we went first thing in the morning so we only waited about 5 minutes to enter. Despite my fear they wouldn’t, they do let you bring backpacks in (just not suitcases)

I absolutely loved the atmosphere at Shakespeare and Company—it’s full of charm, history, and character. There was no line when we visited, which made the experience even more enjoyable. I definitely recommend picking up a souvenir, whether it’s a book or one of their iconic tote bags—the quality is excellent and it’s a perfect reminder of such a unique place. A must-visit for book lovers in Paris!
